Summer of 60 Pins, #1: Les Miserables

The Pin:

The Background: My sister Amy has season tickets to shows in Austin with a group of friends. One friend couldn't go, so they invited me! I asked Amy what the play was about, and she said, "I don't know, but the music is beautiful!"

The Good: From the get-go when the music started with a bang and the chain gang started singing, I was hooked. And when Jean Valjean came out and immediately hit every note while singing his complicated life story... just wow. I was crying by the time Fantine hits hard times. I thought the play would be weird and depressing. It is overpowering. Even though I couldn't understand all the words in the songs, I was overcome by the emotion. Every actor was so talented and engaging. Almost before the final note was sung, the audience was giving a standing ovation.

The Bad: Soon into the play, the man next to me started humming. He even sang a little. At least he was on key. I didn't get home till 1 a.m., which is late for this old lady. And then I wanted to Google everything about the play and the actors.

Summary: The experience was more than worth it, and I am grateful to Amy and Diane for taking me. If you ever have a chance to see any of these actors anywhere, run and buy tickets: Peter Lockyer (Valjean), Chasten Harmon (Eponine), or Betsy Morgan (Fantine). I really don't think there was a bad apple in the bunch.
